What to expect in this course

This course is meant to build on basic knowledge of Excel. This course is hands-on, and participants are expected to follow along with the instruction using their own computers.  Many exercises will be provided to help reinforce concepts.

The course was created using Microsoft Excel 365 but any version of Microsoft Excel is fine.

You may find it helpful to view this course on a tablet (or separate screen) while simultaneously using a computer to work through the Excel exercises. Any version of Microsoft Excel is fine, though some of the keyboard shortcuts may not work depending on your computer's individual settings, and/or if you are using a Mac.

Note: Mac users may wish to download their Bootcamp software (https://support.apple.com/boot-camp) or run parallel operating systems to access Excel through Windows.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Use keyboard shortcuts to quickly navigate Excel
  • Enter and format data efficiently
  • Copy/cut/paste data and formulas
  • Effectively use relative and absolute cell referencing where appropriate
  • Enter/edit and use best practices for writing formulas
  • Create commonly used financial charts, including: line charts, X Y Scatter plots, pie charts, candlestick stock charts, and football field valuation charts
  • Build efficient dynamic models in Excel
  • Concatenate and parse text using both static and dynamic methods
  • Clean up text and work with wildcards
  • Apply conditional formatting to quickly spot issues or build checks
  • Apply data validation to prevent potential errors
  • Use advanced functions to analyze data and test out different scenarios
  • Add customized controls to your spreadsheets
  • Utilize formulas such as: VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, CHOOSE, INDEX, and OFFSET
  • Work with Excel’s Goal Seek What-if Analysis tool
  • Build PivotTables and PivotCharts to quickly aggregate and summarize large datasets
